Tested before it ever reads your business.
A diagnostic you cannot trust is worse than none: it replaces uncertainty with false confidence. So Helcyon’s engine is held to a validation discipline more like an instrument than an app: tested across hundreds of businesses in 20 industries, checked against holdouts it never trained on, and reviewed by people who did not build it.
- Built by operators
- Pressure-tested by CFOs
- Checked on holdouts
- Independently reviewed
Built by operators, pressure-tested by CFOs.
The rule set did not start in a lab. It started with operators who have run businesses through real pressure, and every rule was then pressure-tested by working CFOs against the question that matters: would an experienced finance chief read this signal the same way?
Where the answer was no, the rule changed.
The holdout discipline.
An engine calibrated and graded on the same businesses will always look better than it is. Helcyon’s calibration is checked against holdout businesses the engine never sees during development.
The engine has to be right about businesses it has never met, because that is the only condition it will ever face in production.
Calibration is graded against the sealed set. The engine has to be right about businesses it has never met.
No rule ships on its author’s word.
Inside Helcyon, the person who builds a rule is never the person who certifies it. Every rule is reviewed independently by someone who did not write it before it is allowed to touch a diagnosis.
It is slower. It is also the only way to catch the errors an author cannot see in their own work.
The engine is tested on what it refuses to answer.
Most software is tested on whether it produces the right answer. Helcyon is also tested on whether it declines correctly: whether books that should not reconcile are refused, whether findings without sufficient evidence are marked Not Yet Assessable instead of rendered, whether a number that cannot survive a trace to its transactions is withheld. A fail-closed engine has to prove it fails closed.
A fail-closed engine has to prove it fails closed. The correct output for each of these is a refusal, and passing means the engine declined.

Helcyon is monitoring live financial data in private beta, under the same rules described on these pages.
The methodology and its validation path are documented in working papers on SSRN
